Peperro day is coming up and I am not happy about it. Peperro day (뻐뻐로) is like Korean Valentine’s day. On November 11th (11.11 and this year 11.11.11 wow) you are supposed to give your loved ones peperro sticks. They are like pocky sticks, which are more popular and known in the states. All the convenience stores are selling humongous boxes of peperro. I don’t think I will be receiving any this year ㅠㅠ (Taken with Instagram at olive young)

New segment on eating in korea and understanding caloric intake in a foreign country. Check the Tumblr for details! Yummy but DAMN the sodium in Korea! (Taken with Instagram at GS25 서교중앙점)

ALRIGHT GUYS! So…this is not something I talk about a lot but it is something I began paying close attention to about two years ago. Caloric intake! I used to be around 30 pounds heavier than I am now, and while there was nothing wrong with how I looked then, I just did not feel like myself. I have always been very active and enjoy working out, but as some of you know, have a serious appetite for food in general. A few of my co workers here in Seoul have called me “Nang jang go Noona,” Meaning “Refrigerator Noona.” I have a tattoo of a refrigerator and love to eat…so…well you see.

The point…Eating in Korea can become a serious problem for a foreigner like me who A) LOVES Korean food, B) Is surrounded by friends who always want to go out to eat, and C) Can’t help but take advantage of how cheap the food is! Also, one of my old tricks to avoid eating so much was to get a black coffee, which happens to be the most expensive item of choice when eating out (a plate of meat can even be cheaper at times!).

Like many others, I started using Calorie counting apps. They are so amazing! I even have one now on my iPhone that has a bar code scanner (MyFitness Pal App). PROBLEM: Doesn’t work on Korean bar codes and most of the items are not in the system. Well…I have decided to start documenting the items I buy from the plethora of convenience stores and entering their nutrition facts into the application I use on my iPhone as well as display them here for you. This may become a Bananamilk post in the future, as well. Hopefully those of you living in Korea can learn along with me, while the rest of you can just stare at all the cute packaging!

This was my breakfast this morning. I am already aware of how unhealthy most Korean snacks are…but actually looking at the numbers is a totally different story. Sorry if I added a lot of unnecessary details about the product, I just wanted to make it easier for foreigners to find it in the App.

Cheese Bread, Cheese Bang (Shany Breaday, The Pan):
# of servings- 2 1/3 (serving size was weird on this, it was about 3, so this is the exact number for whole package)
serving size- 1 package (about 3 in each)
Calories- 420kcal
Total Fat- 14g
Saturated Fat- 5.8g
Trans Fat- 0g
Cholesterol- 23.3mg
Sodium- 560mg
Total Carbs- 74.7g
Sugars- 21g
Protein- 9.3g

Egg and Ham Kim Bap (1000 냥황 김밥, 말아먹는 김밥, eating push kim bap
# of servings- 1
Serving size- 1 whole wrap
Calories- 333kcal
Total Fat- 6g
Saturated Fat- 1.1g
Trans Fat- 0g
Cholesterol- 40mg
Sodium- 1265mg (0_o)
Total Carbs- 48g
Protein- 8g

Sweet Americano (Maxin Espresso T.O.P.)
# of servings- 1
Serving size- 1 can
Calories- 35kcal

All of this cost a total of 3,500 Won (around $3.00), yet it totaled a whopping 788 calories.
